Morning legends.
I LOVE DRAWING COMICS! Just putting that out there. I actually have to force myself to take a day off & do something other than draw, which often turns into a day of talking about what I’m drawing at that given time, I can only apologise to my good lady wife/ family/ friends & sometimes intrigued strangers at the bar, I’m sure it must be with very quick regret when they ask “what’ve you been up to this week?”…DRAWING COMICS!!
Since our last catch up, where I’d finished thumb nailing, Monday rolled in & I’ve taken the decision to jump straight into the inking stage & for a couple of good reasons. First off, most of my thumbnails were more like rough pencils & it’s been a lot easier to work from them as they are. I’ve found that quite often I’ll catch more of the essence of a panel on my first pass, that somehow it’s in a more natural & honest state which can easily be lost with constant redraws.
Secondly & possibly more importantly, my confidence is currently at an all time high with what I’m getting down on the screen, it’s almost like a slight levelling up has occurred & I’m actually tuned into it for once (I rarely notice personal upgrades until a long time after when I may compare early work to my latest stuff?).
The first three days of this week were spent drawing six different cities from all over the globe & I don’t mind telling you that was a joyous slog! I’m pretty sure though that when I put my colourists hat on in a few weeks I won’t be feeling so smug.
There’s still more details to get down which I will be doing once it’s coloured.
I often forget the amount of time you can spend searching for the right reference shots to work from & the chances of someone having taken the exact shot you may have had in mind from the exact angle etc is pretty slim. However, you can also find that someone has given you an angle that you hadn’t considered which can be a real bonus.
Pinterest & Google images have been a massive help over the years!
With this coming week I’m already excited about the pages ahead as it’s getting into the other characters & environments that should be a lot of fun to produce, from an Elf rescue team to a sonic Swiss Army knife, oh, & sewerage.
I also intend to finish another couple of Griff Gristle page’s as I’m not overly keen on running multiple projects at the same time, my usual approach is one at a time if it’s on a collaboration or for a writer.
My own projects are a different animal.
SPACEBOY & THE FUTURE KING 2 : AWAKENING OF THE SPITTYPIG! sneak peek…
It picks up immediately from issue one’s ‘cliff hanger’ & I honestly cannot wait to get it out to you all.
Well, I think that’s everything for this one, I hope you all have a fantastic week if you can & did I mention I LOVE DRAWING COMICS!?!
Go steady,
Rory.
