Morning.
I’ll begin with something I’ve recently noticed while running this 2nd Kickstarter campaign that may be of use to those looking at doing one themselves, the amount of emails & messages you’ll receive from people who’ve been “stopped in their tracks by your campaign” & who “don’t usually reach out but after spotting your..blah..blah..blah” not to mention the messages telling you that your kickstarter account has been temporarily suspended until you verify a few details etc etc.
File all those under ‘IGNORE’.
Thankfully I’m in my 50’s & don’t relish any form of contact with strangers unless I initiate it, shit, I don’t even answer the phone when it rings?
Seeing as I’m on the subject of Kickstarter, SPACEBOY & THE FUTURE KING 2 , is currently sitting at 68% complete with a few hundred pounds left to raise in 25 days! An amazing achievement so far. As mentioned in last weeks newsletter it’s not disheartening to see this campaign running differently from the last one, in fact it’s more engaging. For anyone who’s wondering what this particular title is about allow me a moment to explain.
SPACEBOY & THE FUTURE KING 2 is a follow on from issue 1, obvious I know, but it’s a direct continuation from the last panel of issue 1 (you can still snag a copy of issue 1 on this Kickstarter). It’s an all ages comic telling the story of a young fella, Arthur, living in Tintagel north Cornwall who believes this to be the most boring village around, a belief that soon becomes apparent he was wrong about! After a strange sighting in the night sky he’s flung into a duel to the death with a fearsome looking creature, or so it seems…
It’s a story I’d written a good few years ago as I walked the coast path between the village of Tintagel & a beach known as Trebarwith Strand where I’m very happy to say I live. The idea was to create a fun little character that I’d enjoy drawing over & over in what will hopefully be many tales. It was during one of these walks that I remembered how much I’d enjoyed the fabulous Asterix & Obelix books when I was a kid (still do) & then later in life along come Calvin & Hobbes, what a time to be alive?! By the end of the walk from Tintagel castle to the beach (pub more like) down at Trebarwith I’d come up with the whole book which originally was going to be just that, one complete book, however as the years passed & I was very busy working on other title collaborations, I realised that the whole book split very nicely into 3, each ending on a cliff hanger.
Anyway, it’s a title that I’m very pleased with & have the next set already lined up & ready to write, piskies anyone?
In other news, that whooshing sound we all heard was last week shooting by & a very productive one it was too. The inks on JINGLE SQUAD are now complete so the colours will begin tomorrow & even though I’m headed upcountry for a few days I’ll be taking my work with me.
I know what those squiggles mean, it’ll make more sense when it’s coloured?
This being chapter 2 of JINGLE SQUAD is 36 pages long & as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before I altered my usual approach to it by breaking it down into thirds when it came to the pencils & inks stages to see if it aided my work flow or hindered it? All I can say for certain is I’m still on schedule to finish on time & had I not lost a couple of weeks over these past couple of months I’m reasonably sure I’d be finishing around about now.
I may well do the same again with the next one which I believe comes in at the 27 page mark.
Ok, that’s it for today.
See you next week.
Rory.
