Late again, sorry.
I’d spent the whole of Sunday catching up on work after the literal shit show that was the week before (read last weeks Substack if you’re that interested?). This week has definitely been much more productive & I don’t mind admitting I felt like I’ve never done one before when it came to this new Kickstarter launch. For anyone who’s thinking of doing one please don’t be put off by the hoops you have to jump through as it can all seem a little overwhelming.
So just to clarify for those who may not know, this weekend just gone I launched part 2 of my comic SPACEBOY & THE FUTURE KING 2 (👈🏻use this link if you wish to back the project?) on Kickstarter. It’s a continuation of a story that introduces us to a young, not yet king, Arthur & the north Cornish village on the coastline now known as Tintagel & his new found friend Merlin. It’s an all ages book with a tip of the hat towards a couple of industry giants Asterix & Obelix, Calvin & Hobbes.
At the time of writing this the crowdfunding campaign sits at around the halfway mark after 30 odd hours, which is fantastic & very different from the first one which funded in under 16hrs. I’m not disheartened by this, it just felt a good point to show how differently these things can go. I’ve heard it mentioned before that the number ones of a comic do tend to do a lot better as you get a lot of family & friends backing you to help get you off the ground, so with this one I’m really intrigued how many are coming back for the comic itself? I’m also curious to see how the whole 34 day run time pans out this time around.
While I’m on the subject of Kickstarters there’s another you may wish to check out which is going great guns, THUNDERCHILD: THE COMPLETE SAGA (👈🏻link) a WAR OF THE WORLDS tale by a talented collaboration from indie powerhouses MADIUS COMICS & MAD ROBOT COMICS.
Meantime the majority of my week has been spent tackling some page designs & having a really productive push with the pencils stage of the remaining JINGLE SQUAD pages, only 8 to go which I’m planning on having completed by the Wednesday morning meeting! It’s been a fascinating change of approach to this chapter as it’s had me stopping at stages to then go back to ink the work so far to designing all the other bits & pieces as they arrive in the script, Santa’s sleigh for example, when it turns up in the story it’s a, shall we say, a little worse for wear & I quickly realised that to draw it in it’s ’banged up state’ I needed to know what it looked like originally. It’s a lot of fun doing this on the hoof as it were.
I’m getting very excited on this chapter as I inch closer to the colouring stage.
Right then, I’ve got to get on.
Until next time.
Rory.
